Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the City of Olathe adopted the City of Moss Point, Mississippi, a small Gulf Coast community.
Olathe's City and community leaders along with officials from Richmond, Virginia, Burlington, Vermont and other cities across the country worked in collaboration with the leadership of Moss Point to match needs with resources in order to provide assistance with rebuilding the Moss Point community.
The funds collected, nearly $9,000 as of May, 2007, will be used to assist Moss Point's recreation and public works departments.
A community-wide task force is coordinating the City's efforts. Task Force Member Organizations include: The City of Olathe, Olathe Pastors Network, the Character Council of Olathe, Olathe District Schools, the Olathe Chamber of Commerce, Heart to Heart International, Olathe Medical Center, the Olathe News, Significant Matters, Olathe civic clubs, The Carpenter's Touch and Midwest Missionair.
Hurricane Katrina damaged property throughout Moss Point, a small working-class town of 15,000 people that is located about seven miles from the Gulf of Mexico and about 30 miles from Biloxi, Miss. Many of the community's homes, businesses, churches, and schools were damaged by the hurricane's storm surge.
The City's connection with Moss Point was made possible by Mayors on a Mission, created by The U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National Council of Black Mayors.
