Budget Calendar

2013 Budget Calendar (all dates subject to change)


Every year, the Olathe Budget Division reviews the Budget Phases and sets the budget calendar. Dates below are tentative and will be updated as dates are known.

Planning

  • March 20, 2012: County Appraiser presentation regarding anticipated assessed valuation.
  • April 3, 2012: Review results of City Council budget survey.
  • April 17, 2012: Present financial outlook and key fiscal issues for the upcoming year. City Council establishes budget guidelines/philosophy.

Department Budget Development

  • April 2012: Budget instructions and worksheets distributed to departments.
  • April 2012: Departments prepare budget requests, develop budget strategies and adjust performance measures as necessary.
  • May 2012: Budget office reviews and analyzes department documents and prepares summaries and recommendations for the budget team.


Enterprise Fund and Fee Development

  • March 2012: Departments submit fee recommendations and update fee schedule.
  • April 2012: Budget instructions  and worksheets distributed to departments.
  • April 2012: Departments prepare budget requests, develop budget strategies and adjust performance measures as necessary.
  • March - May 2012: Budget office reviews and analyzes department submitted documents and prepares summaries and recommendations for the budget team.
  • June 5, 2012: Proposed enterprise fund budgets and proposed fee resolution presented to City Council.

Creation of the City Manager’s Proposed Budget

  • May 2012: The budget office works with departments on making final revisions.
  • June 2012: Final adjustments in revenue and expenditure estimates are prepared by the budget office.
  • June 2012: City Manager’s balanced proposed budget is prepared.
  • June 2012: Budget office produces the proposed budget document.
  • June 19, 2012: City Manager presents proposed budget to the City Council (tentative date).

Public Input Opportunities

  • January - August 2012: Public input welcome by contacting the Budget Office.
  • May 8, 2012: Youth Engagement Forum for junior high, high school, and college students to provide feedback on community priorities. Feedback will be used as budget input where applicable. Hosted by the Olathe Teen Council.
  • July 10, 2012: e-Town Hall (tentative date).

Review

  • May 15, 2012: Chamber of Commerce Budget Presented to City Council.
  • June 5, 2012: Library Budget Presented to City Council.
  • July 2012: Budget Workshops
  • August 7, 2012: Public Hearing

Adoption

  • August 21, 2012: Adopt and sign 2013 budget resolution and 2013 fee resolution.
  • August 24, 2012: Budget forms due to the County Clerk.
  • Nov. 15, 2012: Budget Book due to Government Finance Officer Association.
  • December 2012: Final Budget Books printed and posted on website.
