Early each year, City staff begin working on the next year's operating budget in order to present a proposed document to the City Council in early summer. City Council members and City staff will work throughout the summer to refine the budget before it is adopted in the fall. Citizen input is a critical component of the process and we welcome your input. Email your inquiries to the Budget Office.

Budget Award-Winning Performance
The City of Olathe's 2013 Budget Book was awarded the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 7th consecutive year. The award is based on a series of criteria addressing how clearly and accurately the document explains the budget to members of the public.
The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.
Documents submitted to the Budget Awards Program are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and by outside reviewers with experience in public-sector budgeting. For more information visit the GFOA website.
