Founded in 1991, Explorer Post 2884 - a coed program affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America - is a career development initiative that provides youth, age 14-20, the opportunity and experience to prepare themselves for an emergency services career. Explorers help the fire
department in community service and on fire and medical scenes. It also gives youth a better understanding of the fire service and its career opportunities.
Explorers complete a 6-month training program to learn about the fire department and to prepare themselves for a career in the fire service. Biweekly meetings attended by Explorers provide them with instruction in areas such as Fire Safety, Operations and Procedures, Fire Tactics, Emergency Medical Services and Public Education. Explorer advisors are real Olathe firefighters who help them develop the skills they need to become a firefighter.
