The Olathe-Kansas School for the Deaf connection began in 1866. C.H. Hyer, maker of the first true cowboy boot, taught shoe making and harness making to KSD students for six years. Hyer employed many deaf workers at Olathe Boot Company until C.H. Hyer and Sons, Inc. closed in 1978. C.H. Hyer and employees are pictured in front of the business in the courthouse square.
