Section 8 Program

The Section 8 program provides subisidized rental assistance to low-income families, the elderly and the disabled.   Program participants rent qualified privately-owned units, of their choice, located within the Olathe community.  The program is funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Program Eligibility Requirements:

  • Family's income meets program guidelines
  • Qualifies as elderly, a person with a disability or as a family
  • Meet Olathe Housing Authority's local working preference or qualifies as exempt for elderly and/or disabled Head of households
  • U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status
  • Pass a criminal background check

 

Housing Authority's Responsibilities:

  • Issue vouchers to program eligible families
  • Make housing assistance payments (HAP) on behalf of HUD to participating landlords
  • Annually recertify families for rental assistance
  • Inspect rental units prior to lease up and annually thereafter to ensure unit meets Housing Quality Standard

 

Tenant Responsibilities:

  • Comply with the terms of the voucher and the lease with landlord
  • Report changes in income or family composition within the month the change occurs to Olathe Housing Authority (OHA) in writing
  • Keep the unit clean and free of damage
  • Allow OHA to conduct annual and special inspections with proper notice
  • Allow landlord access to unit to make repairs with proper notice
  • Notify landlord and OHA in writing of intent to move, give up voucher or move to another housing authority jurisdiction
