Statement from Mayor Michael Copeland

We’re united here today in our grief. We mourn the loss of Srinivas Kuchibhotla; a young man taken too soon. We gather today to honor him. To Srinivas’ wife – We stand with you and your family and will continue to support you during these difficult days.
As a community we are shocked. We are saddened. We are devastated. We are angry. What has happened has happened to our entire community. It happened to each of us. It will stay with us. But, this is not how it ends. This is not our Olathe.
Our Olathe is a community united; a community that loves each other. We are a community that treasures our different backgrounds, our different origins, and our different traditions. That is who we are, and that is what makes us special. Our amazing diversity is our source of strength and pride. It always will be.
People will see this community, this entire community, come together as it always does. We will console each other. We will mourn together. We will stand up for each other as we always do.
Here’s my challenge to you. Use this as an opportunity to honor Alok, Ian, and especially Srinivas. Show the world that one evil act does not divide, but strengthens, a united community.
May God Bless you and this diverse community of compassion.
On behalf of the Olathe City Council,
Michael Copeland, Mayor
