Housing construction has dramatically slowed both nationally and in Johnson County, and Olathe's rapid growth has slowed as well. However, Olathe continues dramatically outpacing other Johnson County cities in the number of new permits issued. Through the first two quarters of the year, Olathe has issued 131 of the 278 single family permits in Johnson County, three times as many as any other Johnson County city.
In addition, the second quarter of 2009 showed a sizeable increase in housing activity in Olathe. Though far from the numbers in recent years, the number of second quarter permits issued in Olathe (84) was nearly double that of the first quarter (47). The City issued 144 permits during the second quarter in 2007.
