Olathe Teen Council Accepting Applications for 2008-09 School Year
Released 3/31/08

The Olathe Teen Council is now accepting applications for membership for the 2008-09 school year. The Olathe Teen Council is a representative body of students with delegates recruited from each of the local four senior high schools, the eight junior high schools and the Kansas School for the Deaf. Modeled after the City Council, Teen Council serves as the youth voice to city government and also as a service group for projects designed to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Olathe.

Olathe Teen Council meets on a monthly basis at Olathe City Hall, 100 E. Santa Fe. Elected officers conduct all meetings with some formalism, which prepares the students with the basic protocols of conducting their business at hand, efficiently and respectfully.
Applications are due Thursday, May 1 and are available at www.olatheks.org/NHS/HumanServices/YouthServices/TeenCouncil.

"Being involved in Olathe Teen Council has given me opportunities to work with Olathe's city council and mayor," said Devin Smith, Olathe Youth Congress member. "It also introduced me to the National League of Cities, in which I became more involved by being one of three youth from across the nation to sit on the Youth, Education and Families Council. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that allowed me to travel the country, meet our nation's leaders, and direct policy discussions. All of this stemmed from my involvement in Olathe Teen Council here in Olathe."

Routine functions of the Olathe Teen Council include: assisting in the implementation of Olathe Youth Congress priorities, participating in City boards and task forces, acting as the eyes and ears of their peers, serving as the avenue through which youth can submit ideas or concerns to the Olathe City Council or other appropriate organizations, and the implementation of special projects
such as Splash Night, which helps support local children's literacy programs.

For more information about Olathe Teen Council, contact Tabitha Davis, youth programs specialist, (913) 971-6287.

Olathe Teen Council is a partnership of the City of Olathe, Olathe District Schools, Kansas School for the Deaf and Olathe Children's Initiatives.

Downtown Olathe Parking Garage Opening with March 26 Ceremony
Released 3/17/08

The newly-expanded and enhanced downtown Olathe parking garage, located north of Loula between Cherry and Chestnut Streets, will officially open after a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26. The ceremony will be held at the new Chestnut St. entrance to the expanded garage.

This expansion project has added 400 parking spaces in that area. The project was started June 30, 2007 and was completed on-time and on-budget.

Specifically, the project constructed a new six-level parking garage on the site of the existing parking lot located directly north of the existing parking garage. The project also linked the twostructures together and made aesthetic improvements to the existing garage to tie it together visually with the new garage and other surrounding buildings.

This is a joint project of the City of Olathe and Johnson County.

Expanding parking in downtown Olathe is one component of the City of Olathe's commitment to downtown Olathe. In 2003 the Council approved the Envision Olathe Plan which outlines a comprehensive revitalization plan for downtown Olathe. The parking garage expansion project is one of the first visible steps taken from that plan. Other projects include the railroad elevation project, also near completion, and the Santa Fe streetscape project set to begin next spring.

For questions related to this work or the parking garage expansion project, contact Jeff Blakeman, project coordinator, 913-971-8767.

Lawn Irrigation Inspection Program Protects Water Supply
Released 3/17/08

With the arrival of spring, comes the inevitable return of routine lawn maintenance. The City of Olathe Municipal Services Department would like to remind Olathe water customers of the City's Cross-Connection Program, which includes an annual inspection and testing for all backflow prevention devices installed on underground lawn irrigation systems.

The City's Cross-Connection Program helps to ensure safe water for all Olathe water customers by eliminating the risk of potential water contamination through cross-connections. A cross-connection is any connection between the public water supply and a source where there is potential for contaminants to enter the City's water supply. The connection between a lawn irrigation system and the City's main water supply is an example of a cross-connection.

The installation of an approved backflow prevention device on lawn irrigation systems can prevent possible contamination of the City's water supply with contaminates such as lawn fertilizers, chemicals and pesticides. The Olathe Municipal Code and Cross-Connection Program require that an approved backflow prevention device be installed on all cross-connections that are considered "high risk" by the International Plumbing Code, including lawn irrigation systems.

These devices must be tested and inspected by a certified backflow tester, available through many licensed plumbing and irrigation companies, with results recorded on a City of Olathe report form and submitted to the City. Additional program information is being mailed to all Olathe residential and commercial water customers with underground lawn irrigation systems and is also available at www.olatheks.org.

For more information about the City's Cross-Connection Program or how to make the most of your lawn irrigation system, call 913-971-9311 or visit the City website at www.olatheks.org, select Municipal Services Department.

Severe Weather Awareness Week: Are You and Your Family Prepared?
Released 3/10/08

The Olathe Fire Department challenges you to prepare and plan for severe weather during "Kansas Severe Weather Awareness Week," March 10-14, 2008.

In 2007, Kansas reported 137 tornadoes - that's 80 more than Kansas' annual average and a new record for a single year!! Last year, Kansas tornadoes killed 14 people and injured 82.  The Greensburg tornado, on May 4, 2007, is the strongest tornado on record.

Lightning is the #2 weather killer in the United States - killing more people than tornadoes and hurricanes combined!! Lightning produces an electric charge or current that generates heat up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit - that's five times hotter than the sun's surface.

Do you know the fastest and most reliable way to receive information about severe weather and other community hazards like chemical spills or leaks? A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All-Hazards Radio is the fastest and most reliable way to receive severe weather watches, warnings and advisories and information about other community hazards. One metro program, Project Community Alert, makes NOAA all-hazard radios available at cost.

The annual statewide tornado drill is Tuesday, March 11 at 1:30 p.m.  In the event of inclement weather, the drill will occur on Thursday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m.

Do you know what CERT is? CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team. A CERT group is an organized team of people trained by the Olathe Fire Department for disaster planning, preparedness and survival. The Olathe CERT program has trained more than 800 people since its inception in 2001.

Learn more about severe weather, emergency preparedness and CERT by calling Olathe's Emergency Management Coordinator Rita Hoffman at (913) 971-7943 or visit www.olatheks.org and click on "Emergency Preparedness."

Sign Up Now for Upcoming Community Emergency Response Team Training
Released 3/10/08

The Olathe Fire Department is accepting applications for the next Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class.  The next CERT class will begin Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m. at the Fire Administration Building, 1225 S. Hamilton Circle, Olathe.

CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number of people.  A CERT group is an organized team of people trained for disaster planning, preparedness and survival. Following a major disaster, like a tornado strike, professional first responders who provide fire and medical services may not be able to meet the initial demand for these services.

The potential for large numbers of victims, disabled telecommunication equipment, and road blockages may delay emergency services workers from reaching disaster victims. In a disaster, people will have to rely on each other for help to meet their immediate live-saving and life-sustaining needs. A CERT network can train people to meet Olathe's needs in the event of a disaster.

The course will run form 1-5 p.m. Saturday March 22 through April 19.

An on-line application is available at www.olatheks.org/Fire/ResponseTeam or contact Rita Hoffman, (913) 971-7943, for more information.

Champions of Character Parent Seminar Teaches Sportsmanship to Adults on Sidelines
Released 3/3/08

Good sportsmanship is a top priority within the City of Olathe sports programs for players, coaches, fans and especially parents.  That's why one parent is encouraged to attend a Champions of Character Parent Seminar.  The seminars, which educate parents about the importance of remaining spectators and letting the participants play the game, are being taught by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

"While we are proud to say that we have not had any incidents of bad sportsmanship by our parents or participants in the City of Olathe's Parks and Recreation programs, we realize that seminars such as these are important to inform everyone about the importance of respecting one another during a sports event as well as realizing that it is a game and that we all need to just have fun," said Brad Clay, superintendent of the City of Olathe's Parks and Recreation Department.

One parent is encouraged to attend a Champions of Character seminar if they have a child or children participating in sports through Olathe Parks and Recreation, Olathe Youth Baseball, Inc., Olathe Girls Softball Association or Kansas Rush Soccer.

Parents who attend a seminar and sign the "Parent Champions of Character Seminar" form will be exempt from attending another Champions of Character seminar for three years from the last seminar attended. This exemption includes all of the sports groups listed above.

The seminar for spring sports will be March 27 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Olathe East High School Auditorium, 14545 W. 127th St.

For more information about the Champions of Character Parent Seminar, call the City of Olathe Parks and Recreation Dept. at 913-971-6263.
