New FEMA Flood Maps Go Into Effect August 3rd
Since 2008, the City has been working with Johnson County to study flood plains along Cedar Creek, Mill Creek and Indian Creek. As a result of the studies, a much more accurate picture of flood risk was developed.
As a result of the updated maps, more properties were removed from the floodplain than added. On August 3rd, updated floodplain maps will go into effect that identify areas along the creeks that are at risk of flooding, and these changes will impact a number of property owners. Properties no longer included in the floodplain may no longer be required to carry federal flood insurance while those added could now meet that requirement.
Property owners or insurance agents can access the new maps on the City's website www.olatheks.org/PublicWorks/Engineering/FEMA/Maps.
