The Center for the Implementation of Public Policies Promoting Equity and Growth (CIPPEC), an independent Argentinean agency created to enhance government performance and accountability, researched performance measurement best practices across the United States and found the City of Olathe. As a result, the agency requested that Olathe participate in a national forum to help Argentinean governments learn from the best.
Alan Shorthouse, Assistant Director of Strategic Financial Management in charge of the City’s performance measurement program, will join a representative from Miami Dade County (the only other government singled out) in Buenos Aires next week as keynote presenters in a “Sub-National Dialogue between Argentina and the United States: Performance Management and Accountability to the Citizen”. The United States Embassy in Argentina is funding the trip through CIPPEC.
Shorthouse will conduct an 1.5 hour presentation on Olathe’s program to national and local leaders, including governors of all Argentinean provinces. The City of Olathe’s performance measurement efforts have been recognized regionally and nationally, and most recently, they were highlighted as a best practice by the International County/City Managers Association (ICMA). The City was given the ICMA Certificate of Excellence award, the highest award the organization presents for in this category.
Performance measures are designed to ensure resources are being used as efficiently and effectively as possible as well as ensure government transparency and accountability. Olathe’s performance measure reports are available on the City’s website, www.OlatheKs.org, under the Accountable Government section.
