Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site received a $36,500 grant from the Johnson County Heritage Trust Fund when it was approved by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners on Thursday, Aug. 16.
The funding will help the city-owned facility at 1100 Kansas City Road expand and enhance its educational programs. Previous grants from the Heritage Trust Fund have paid for restoration projects at Mahaffie and Ensor Park and Museum, as well as exhibit projects for the Mahaffie Heritage Center.
The Olathe Historical Society also received $34,500 Thursday from the Heritage Trust Fund to produce a 15-minute documentary. “The Flying Jayhawks” will tell the story of the Olathe Naval Air Station, a military base that operated from 1942 to 1970. The site is now the New Century AirCenter.
Heritage Trust Fund dollars were approved for 11 projects totaling $198,445 in six county cities. Applicants requested $315,241. Three projects were not funded.
