The City Council adopted the 2012 International Building Code series with minor amendments Tuesday, Oct. 16. The new codes only will affect new construction, renovations to existing buildings and property inspections.
The International Building Code is a model code developed by the International Code Council intended to protect public health, safety and welfare by creating standards for construction.
City staff had been working since earlier this year with other jurisdictions in Johnson County and the Kansas City metro area to study, review and prepare consistent recommendations for the code series. Olathe had previously used the 2000 International Building Code. A majority of the changes clarify or modify the existing code.
The new codes will take effect April, 1 2013. They are scheduled to be available online by Thanksgiving at www.olatheks.org.
