City of Olathe to Host Housing Summit to Focus on Home Construction
With the nationwide slowdown in new housing construction impacting this region, the City of Olathe is hosting a housing summit for home builders, developers, realtors and others involved in the housing industry. Discussion topics include industry assessment of today's challenges and ideas to address them, current construction activity in Olathe as well as what possible role the City could have in helping quicken the recovery. Olathe's "Best Tasting Water" to Be Recognized at Council Meeting
During the November 4th City Council Meeting, the City of Olathe will be recognized by the Kansas American Water Works Association for having the best tasting water in the 2008 "Water Taste Contest". The contest was held on September 8th.
Besides, the City of Olathe, the water contest included utilities from Fort Scott, Kan.; Bonner Springs, Kan.; Winfield, Kan.; Topeka, Kan., and the Board of Public Utilities in Kansas City, Kan.
The flavor characteristics of each water system were judged by Dr. Steve Randtkek, a Kansas University Professor; Mike Leonard, AWWA President; Don Gray, KsAWWA Director; Kansas Representative Tom Burroughs; and Patrick McCarthy of the Kansas City, Kansas Chamber of Commence.
The American Water Works Association is the authoritative resource for knowledge, information and advocacy to improve the quality and supply of water in North America and beyond and is the largest organization of water professionals in the world. AWWA advances public heath, safety, and welfare by uniting the efforts of the full spectrum of the entire water community. Veterans' Day Marked at City Hall
As part of Olathe area Veterans' Day observances, the November 4th Olathe City Council meeting will include two special features. The American Legion Earl Collier Post 153 Color Guard will post Colors to commence the meeting. In addition, elementary students from Rolling Ridge Elementary School will sing America the Beautiful.
Cedar Lake Park will Be Temporarily Closed for Construction.
Beginning November 10th, Olathe's Cedar Lake Park (15500 S. Lone Elm Rd) will be closed to accommodate Lone Elm Interchange project construction as well as constructing a new park entrance. Weather permitting, the park is anticipated to reopen in mid-December.
During the closure, visitors are encouraged to take advantage of other Olathe picnic shelter or fishing locations at Lake Olathe (625 Lakeshore Dr), Frisco Lake Park (1100 E. Dennis), or Waterworks Park (610 S. Curtis).
The Cedar Lake Campground will remain open for groups with reservations.
The City regrets any inconvenience and looks forward to the park's reopening.

Plan Extra Time at City Hall on Tuesday
Olathe City Hall (100 E. Santa Fe) not only serves as the home to Olathe's local government, but also as an election polling location. With a very high voter turnout expected, customers visiting City Hall should prepare for a little extra time due to the expected large crowd. Additional parking is available in the City lot on the northwest corner of Kansas Avenue and Santa Fe.
Political Signs Season Over!!!
The City's temporary (political) sign ordinance requires the removal of political signs within 14 days after the election. The City will continue removing signs placed in the public right of way and on other public land. Political campaigns as well as residents and businesses are encouraged to remove signs on private property after Tuesday's election.
Olathe Fire Department Awarded Grant to Support Mahaffie
The Johnson County Heritage Trust Fund and Board of County Commissioners has awarded the Olathe Fire Department a grant for nearly $49,000 to install an automatic fire sprinkler system in the Mahaffie House. The system will help provide for the protection of life, preserve a historically significant property and maintain the historic features and significance of the House.
Olathe Fire Department to Train with National Guard
Members of the Kansas National Guard's 73rd Civil Support Team will partner with the Olathe Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team in a training exercise simulating a weapons of mass destruction event.
The exercise is scheduled at the site of the former Lakeside Hills Golf Course at 9:00 a.m. on November 5th.
