Composting Facility

SPECIAL NOTE: Storm debris bulk pick-up will be offered free of charge in response to recent storms. Bulk pick-up is for large storm debris items ONLY and must be scheduled in advance by calling 913-971-9311. The deadline to reserve a time for the free service is Monday, July 20.

Otherwise, you can take your debris to the City's Composting Facility or prepare smaller yard waste for normal weekly collection. For complete details about how to prepare your debris for pickup, see below.


The City collects yard waste for composting rather than disposal.

Materials are processed into compost and mulch at the Composting Facility and offered back to Olathe residents free of charge.


Curbside Collection

The City provides residential collection of yard waste on a Collection Schedule. The following guidelines apply:

  • Place all yard waste within 8 feet of the curb by 8 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
  • Grass clippings, leaves, and small plant trimmings must be placed in compostable paper yard waste bags or a City YardCart.
  • Plastic bags are not compostable. They will not be collected.
  • Limbs and brush must be:
    • Less than 4 inches in diameter
    • Less than 4 feet in length
    • Securely tied in bundles weighing less than 50 lbs.
  • ​Christmas trees must have the following removed:​
    • ​Plastic bags
    • Ornaments
    • Tinsel
    • Lights

Bulk Pick-up for limbs and brush

  • Over 4 inches in diameter
  • Not bundled according to the above guidelines
  • Call 913-971-9311 to schedule
  • The following charge for loading time applies: $20.00 per 15 minutes of loading time
  • Place all waste within 8 feet of the curb
  • Loads in excess of 20 cubic yards will be charged additional fees for travel time (between loads) to the composting facility.

Self-Haul to the Composting Facility - Olathe residents
127th and Hedge Lane
Monday - Saturday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. 

  • No charge applies.
  • Photo ID is required as proof of residency.
  • ​Materials are not accepted in plastic bags
  • Compost and wood chip mulch is available for self-haul the week of March 30.
  • Bring a shovel and container for self-loading.
