SALARY
Current starting salary for the position of Police Officer is $35,940 with a top out pay of $61,967. We do offer a higher starting salary, depending on KLETC reciprocity in consideration for Patrol experience: 1yr/ $37.377; 2yrs/ $38,872; 3yrs/ $40,427; up to 4yrs/ $42,044. *This adjustment applies to starting salaries only and does not carry with it any increased benefits or tenure.*
Officers without experience will receive a $1500 bonus upon successful completion of the Field Training and Evaluation Program.
POLICE ACADEMY
If you are hired by the Olathe Police Department and do not have law enforcement experience you will attend the Johnson County Regional Police Academy. While in the police academy, you will be paid your starting salary. The Johnson County Regional Police Academy is located in Overland Park, Kansas, on the campus of Johnson County Community College. Operated in cooperation with the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, Johnson County Community College and the Johnson County Chiefs' and Sheriff's Association, the facility provides basic law enforcement training for officers from over 30 agencies in the suburban Kansas City area. Successful completion of the 14-week academy results in certification as a Kansas Law Enforcement Officer.
EQUIPMENT
All equipment, including weapon, leather gear, uniforms, ammunition, is supplied and maintained by the Olathe Police Department. Uniform cleaning is also included.
WORK RELATED INJURY AND ILLNESS
State entitlement
Employees incurring an injury or illness arising out of and in the course of city employment will be provided medical treatment at no cost to the employee and two-thirds of city wages up to the state-approved maximum in compliance with the Kansas workers compensation during the resulting absence from work.
City benefit
In addition to the Kansas required workers compensation medical and wage entitlements, employees may be eligible to receive a city wage supplement for up to 26 weeks. To be eligible, the injured employee must be under the care of a city-approved doctor, must be unable to return to work with or without temporary adjustments to work duties and/or work schedule, the injury must be reported to a supervisor prior to end of work day and not be the result of a violation of city safety procedures. The city wage supplement, when combined with the Kansas workers compensation wage entitlements, will approximate the employee's regular base wage take-home pay.
POLICE OFFICER EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS
The city encourages you to take advantage of educational and vocational course which will improve your job performance and prepare you for promotional opportunities.
You may be reimbursed for 75% of the cost of tuition and books up to $1,500 per year, provided you meet the guidelines for reimbursement.
FLEXIBLE BENEFIT SPENDING – 125 Plan
The city has established a Flexible Benefit Spending Plan under Section 125 of the IRS code which allows eligible employees to pay their monthly premiums for medical and dental insurance on a pre-tax basis.
This IRS Code also allows employees to contribute pre-tax dollars for unreimbursed medical expenses and dependent care expenses. All employees (except seasonal and temporary) are eligible to participate.
All elections are in force through the entire plan year, and changes can be made only if there is a change in family status.
HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFITS
As an employee of the city you may participate in our self-insured group health insurance plan. The coverage includes benefits through Coventry Healthcare of Kansas, Inc., a large area preferred provider organization (PPO), or Coventry Healthcare of Kansas, Inc., Access (HMO). The city pays the full cost of the individual premium for Coventry (PPO) and a substantial portion of the Access option with the employee paying the difference through an automatic payroll deduction. Coverage begins the first day of the month following 30 days of employment.
DENTAL INSURANCE BENEFITS
A Delta Dental insurance plan is available for you and your family with the city paying 100 percent of the individual premium and a substantial portion of the dependent option. There is no charge for the cost of in-network checkups, cleaning and fluoride treatments. Then, after a $25 annual deductible, coverage includes 80 percent of the usual, customary and reasonable cost for fillings, extractions and braces; with bridges and crowns paid at 50 percent subject to certain restrictions. Coverage begins the first day of the month following 30 days of employment.
LIFE INSURANCE/ACCIDENTAL DEATH AND DISMEMBERMENT
The city provides you with a $10,000 life/$10,000 accidental death and dismemberment policy. Coverage is effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment.
You may also purchase up to $500,000 of additional life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment through payroll deduction.
LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE
A base plan of $1,000 of facility benefit for a three-year duration of long-term care is provided at no cost to you. Additional coverage is available at group rates.
SHORT TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE
The city offers a voluntary short term disability insurance policy.
CANCER INSURANCE
The city offers two types of voluntary cancer insurance policies.
RETIREMENT
Following one year of employment, full-time and regular part-time employees must enroll in the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS). Police and fire employees are covered by the Kansas Police and Fire Retirement system (KP&F) effective upon employment. KPERS members contribute four percent (4%) of their salaries and KP&F members contribute seven percent (7%). The retirement systems provide life and long-term disability insurance benefits as well as retirement benefits.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN
You may shelter a portion of your salary from income taxes by deferring an amount, through payroll deduction, into a deferred compensation program.
The city offers three programs: AETNA, ICMA-RC (International City Managers Association), and Nationwide.
The plans feature a variety of investment options. The city will match up to $30 per pay period for the deferred compensation program.
VACATION
As a full-time employee, you will earn vacation leave as follows:
Upon initial eligibility - 10 working days
After 5 years - 15 working days
After 10 years - 18 working days
After 15 years - 20 working days
Vacation leave may be accumulated to twice the amount you earn per year. You must be employed six months before using vacation leave.
SICK LEAVE
Sick leave is earned at the rate of one day per month for full-time employees and one-half day per month for 24-hour firefighters. Sick leave may be used if you are sick, if you have a doctor or dentist appointment, or if a member of your immediate family is ill.
SICK LEAVE BANK
Eligibility: Regular, full-time employees who have a minimum of 144 hours accumulated sick leave hours; regular, part-time employees with 72 hours, and Fire Department employees who work a 56-hour work week with 200 hours accumulated.
Initial Contribution: Sick leave bank membership requires an initial contribution of 24 sick leave hours (full-time), 12 hours (part-time), or 33.6 hours (Fire).
Bank Balance: A required minimum balance of 1200 hours shall be maintained in the sick leave bank. If the balance falls below 1200 hours, members may be required to contribute additional hours in order to maintain membership.
In the event of long term incapacitation from illness or injury, members of the bank will be entitled to apply for allocation of hours from the bank after exhaustion of all accumulated hours.
Employees will be notified one time during the year when they have accumulated enough sick leave hours for eligibility. This notification will begin a 30-day enrollment period in addition to the annual open enrollment in December.
PERSONAL LEAVE DAY
If you are employed on January 1st, you will receive one personal leave day, which may be used with reasonable notice, for any reason you choose during that year.

Wellness Program
The city sponsors a wellness program for all employees to encourage improved health and general fitness. Activities include featured speakers, fitness assessments, and group activities.
Employee Assistance Program
This program provides confidential, professional assistance to help employees and their family members resolve problems that affect their personal lives, and possibly, job performance. Problems commonly handled include marital difficulties, parent-child relationships, alcoholism, drug addition, stress, etc. The program is confidential and can be used by calling the professional counselors directly. The fee for the Employee Assistance Program is paid by the city.
Direct Payroll Deposit
The Direct Payroll Deposit program enables the deposit of all or a portion of an employee's net pay to be made in almost any financial institution (banks, savings & loans, credit unions, etc.) anywhere in the United States. The program allows the employee to split the amount of his or her direct deposit into a maximum of five accounts. The deposit is accomplished through an electronic funds transfer and is available in the employee's designated account on the morning of the normal payday.
U.S. Savings Bonds
Savings bonds of $100 and higher may be purchased through payroll deduction. You can sign up for savings bonds in the Human Resources Department.
Employee Computer Purchase Program
This program was developed to provide all employees the opportunity to increase their computer skills. Any full-time employee can purchase a Dell computer through a payroll deduction program.
