Project Number: 40605C
Project Location/Limits:
Westview trail will connect Calamity Line Park to Dennis Avenue at Grant street. The trail will run along the creek for the majority of the alignment.
Project Scope:
This project was brought before the parks and recreation department from the Westview Neighborhood as a way to enhance this area of Olathe. The city applied for and received transporation enhancment funds to pay for 80% of the construction of this trail. The project will consist of a ten foot wide aphalt trail running along the creek from Calamity Line Park, located along Santa Fe, to Dennis Avenue bike lanes at Grant Street. A low water crossing will connect the trail to the city's park and low income housing just north of Elm Street. This project will expand the current bicycle and pedestrian trail system in the city of Olathe by connecting the Dennis Avenue on road bike lanes to Calamity Line Park along Santa Fe.
Funding for the project is through the park sales tax and the KDOT Transportation Enhancement funds.
Current Project Status:
This project has been delayed for approximately 1 year. At the April 22, 2008 City Council meeting several residence voiced concern about this trail. The City Council asked staff to delay the project for 1 year so additional information and possible alternative options can be investigated. The federal funding associated with this project can not be used on another project as it is tied to the application for this specific project. If the project is not constructed the funding will be declined by the City and used for other transportation projects that KDOT deems necessary.
A storm water study is also under way along the creek where this trail has been proposed. The findings of this flood study may also have implications on how this trail can be aligned. The flood study is being handled by the cities storm water engineer in the Public Works Dept.
A letter to over 600 residence was mailed out on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 informing the Westview Neighborhood of these delays to the project.
