19th Century Farming Featured at Free Mahaffie Event Thursday

In addition to being a historic stagecoach stop, the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop is also a working 19th Century farm.  Visitors can learn about and help with 19th Century farming practices at the historic site’s Family Fun Night Thursday, June 23.  The historic site, 1200 Kansas City Rd., Olathe, will be open with free admission from 6-8 p.m. offering activities focused on 19th Century Farming.

Learn about the crops the Mahaffie’s grew and the methods they used.  Visitors can make a hook to take home in the blacksmith shop or grind corn to feed the farm animals for a small fee.  Visitors also can help saw wood and enjoy 19th Century children’s games and see what's cooking on Mrs. Mahaffie's stove.  Stagecoach rides around the site also will be available; donations of $2 per person are suggested for stagecoach rides.

The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm will host free Family Fun Nights every Thursday night in June and July.  The open late events feature free admission and stagecoach rides.  A fee applies to some special activities.  Each Thursday night visitors can participate in hands-on activities associated with a different aspect of 1860s history. New this year, the first 100 visitors can collect a different Mahaffie animal trading card.  Attend each week to collect all 8.

Remaining events include:

  • Cowboy Night - July 7
  • Civil War  - July 14
  • 19th Century Technology - July 21
  • Kansas Farming - July 28
