Harvest Wheat 19th Century Style at Free Mahaffie Event Thursday

Visitors can help harvest wheat 19th Century style at a free event 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 21 at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop, 1200 Kansas City Rd., Olathe.  The historic site will be open with free admission offering activities focused on 19th Century farming.

In addition to helping harvest the wheat, visitors can learn about the crops the Mahaffie’s grew and the methods they used.  Visitors can make a hook to take home in the blacksmith shop or grind corn to feed the farm animals for a small fee.  Visitors also can help saw wood and enjoy 19th Century children’s games and see what's cooking on Mrs. Mahaffie's stoveStagecoach rides around the site also will be available; donations of $2 per person are suggested for stagecoach rides.

Each Thursday nightin June and July visitors can participate in hands-on activities associated with a different aspect of 1860s history. New this year, the first 100 visitors can collect a different Mahaffie animal trading card with a different animal featured each week.

As a special feature the Olathe Historical Society will present a free public viewing of the newest installment in the “Olathe – the City Beautiful” film series at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 21 at the Heritage Center. The movie will focus on the Mahaffie family.  Free popcorn and drinks will be provided. 
The final Mahaffie Family Fun Night will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 28 and will focus on 19th Century Technology.

On Saturday, July 23 there is a car wash to raise funds for the United Way of Greater Kansas City. The car wash is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a suggested donation of $5/car. All proceeds go to the United Way of Greater Kansas City and the event is sponsored by the City of Olathe. The car wash will take place in the parking lot of the Heritage Center.

The historic site is open with living history activities and stagecoach rides 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.  For a complete listing of events visit www.mahaffie.org or call (913) 971-5111.

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site is operated by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Olathe. Open hours, stagecoach operations, living history activities, special events and programs vary seasonally.  Access is limited in the winter months and the site is closed major holidays.
