The Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team (HCNT) responds to a wide range of situations such as hostage incidents, barricaded subjects, and persons in the midst of emotional crisis, or persons who are mentally ill and needing intervention. 

The HCNT includes a team commander, team leader, multiple team members, and a psychologist who volunteers as a mental health consultant. 

All HCNT members receive extensive training in hostage/crisis negotiations.

HCNT Objectives:

  • Preserve life
  • Defuse volatile situations by negotiation
  • Ensure the safety of everyone involved

The Olathe Police Department (OPD) is a member of the Kansas Association of Hostage Negotiators (KAHN).

OPD team members have served in leadership and guest-speaker roles for the KAHN.

Team members also serve as instructors in the field of hostage/crisis negotiations.
