Baby Chicks Have Hatched at Mahaffie

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm, 1200 Kansas City Rd., Olathe, has welcomed newly hatched baby chicks. Steve Ohmes, Livestock Manager, collected eggs from the chickens at Mahaffie at the beginning of March. The newborn chicks have been hatching out of their egg shells since Friday March 30. The types of chicks are called Barred Rocks and this breed is reflective of the types of chickens the Mahaffie family would have had. You can view the chicks at the gift shop inside the Heritage Center for the next two to three weeks.

Mahaffie will also be closed on Sunday April 8 for the Easter Holiday. Mahaffie will be open Saturday April 7. Living History activities may include blacksmithing, stagecoach rides,  a blacksmith talk will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday and a stagecoach passenger talk a 1 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $6/adults, $4/children ages 5-11, Olathe residents receive $1 off. The Heritage Center only will be open Wednesdays through Fridays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other upcoming spring activities now open for registration are Spring Home School Day Thursday April 19 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Brownie Girl Scout Day Saturday April 21 and the Sunday, April 22 historic cemetery tours. There is a lot of spring planting at Mahaffie. Brownies participating in Brownie Girl Scout Day on Saturday March 31 planted potatoes in the garden. They also had a great view of Don driving our new team of horses, Chip and Ace, as they pulled the grain drill. The grain drill is used to plant the spring wheat. The wheat field has moved from in front of the Mahaffie home to in between the garden and the Heritage Center. You can view more photos of our Saturday March 31 activities on our Facebook Page.

Up to date photos of Living History activities are available on the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop Facebook page.
