Experience Cowboy Life at Free Mahaffie Event Thursday
Saddle up cowboys and cowgirls and experience the life of a Kansas cowboy with a free family event at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site, 1200 Kansas City Rd., Olathe. The historic site will be open 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 7 for Family Fun Night with activities focusing on cowboys.
Visitors can try their hand at roping a “steer,” the blacksmith shop will be open and staff will be cooking outside like the cowboys’ chuckwagons. Visitors also can see what's cooking on Mrs. Mahaffie's stove and try their skills at a variety of games typically played by children in the 19th century. For a small fee visitors can ride the stagecoach around the site, make a leather brand and stamp leather. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner to eat under the white tent.
The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm will host free Family Fun Nights 5-8 p.m. every Thursday night in June and July. The open late events feature free admission. A fee applies to some special activities including stagecoach rides. Each Thursday night visitors can participate in hands-on activities associated with a different aspect of 1860s history. Again this year, the first 100 visitors can collect a Mahaffie Wild West Show trading card; attend each week to collect all 8.
