Experience 1860s Horse Power and Recreation at Free Mahaffie Event Thursday
Learn all about horses by visiting the grooming station, get an up close look at draft power with the site's horse treadmill and see why Mr. Mahaffie was a successful farmer with a free family event at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site, 1200 Kansas City Rd., Olathe. The historic site will be open 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 14 for Family Fun Night with activities focusing on 1860s Horse Power and Recreation.
Visitors can see Horse Pull demonstrations, sponsored by Olathe Tractor and Equipment and Sutherlands, at 5:30 p.m, 6:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. New Horizons Ranch will have Theraputic Riding demonstrations at 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. After helping with the the horses, play 1860s games such as croquet, rolling hoops and graces. ($) Learn about thaumatropes and make one to take home with you. The blacksmith shop will be open and see what's cooking on Mrs. Mahaffie's stove. For a small fee visitors can ride the stagecoach around the site. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner to eat under the white tent. Lines for activties such as stagecoach rides and blacksmithing will close at 7:45 p.m.
The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm will host free Family Fun Nights 5-8 p.m. every Thursday night in June and July. The open late events feature free admission. A fee applies to some special activities including stagecoach rides. Each Thursday night visitors can participate in hands-on activities associated with a different aspect of 1860s history. Again this year, the first 100 visitors can collect a Mahaffie Wild West Show trading card; attend each week to collect all 8.

Dads get in FREE on Father's Day
All dads get in free on Father's Day Sunday June 17th. Family Trees will be available at the Heritage Center to learn all about your family heritage. Living History activities include stagecoach rides, playing 19th Century games and visiting the blacksmith.
Day Out with Frank and Ella Wednesday and Thursday
Preschools, day cares and other youth groups or individuals are invited to attend these drop-in summer fun sessions. Sessions are Wednesdays 9 a.m. to noon or Thursdays noon to 3 p.m. in June and July. Participants will enjoy a different theme each week with hands-on activities, crafts, a stagecoach ride (paying youth only) and must be accompanied by an adult. 1860s Horse Power and Recreation will be the theme June 13 and 14.
Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site is operated by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Olathe. Open hours, stagecoach operations, living history activities, special events and programs vary seasonally. Access is limited in the winter months and the site is closed major holidays.
