Free Mahaffie Event Celebrates Independence Day with 19th Century Fireworksfireworks

The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site, 1200 Kansas City Rd., in Olathe will kick-off Independence Day activities with a free family fun night beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 28.  Admission is free; a fee will be charged for some activities including stagecoach rides. 

A 19th Century baseball game will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the Olathe Civic Band concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.  19th Century fireworks, sponsored by the Olathe Fire Department, will begin at dark.  Visitors can also ride the stagecoach, see what’s cooking on Mrs. Mahaffie’s cookstove and enjoy 19th century games.  The Declaration of Independence will be read at 9:15 p.m. followed by the firing of the cannon.  Visitors also can show their American pride and bring their decorated bike, stroller or wagon to participate in an on-site parade that will begin at approximately 7:15. 

Pie and ice cream will be available for purchase.  Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner, lawn chairs and blankets. 

 

Fourth of July Week Activities at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site, 1200 Kansas City Rd., Olathe, is offering several family-friendly ways to spend time the week of the Fourth of July.  The historic site is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.  Visitors can explore the 1860s working farm and historic stagecoach stop, help with farm chores, ride the stagecoach and more.

Tuesday, July 3 enjoy 1860s activities at the Olathe Chick Fil A, 119th and Black Bob, from 5-8 p.m. Meet a gold miner, learn to card wool and leave a mark on Independence Rock.  Kids eat free at Chick Fil A with each adult combo purchase.

Wednesday, July 4 Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop will be open with regular 19th Century living history activities and stagecoach rides, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children age 5-11.  Wear red, white and blue and receive $1 off admission.

Thursday, July 5 experience life on the Santa Fe, Oregon and California Trails at a free Family Fun Night from 5-8 p.m.  Admission is free; a fee will be charged for some activities including stagecoach rides. 

Visitors can help with trail side cooking and learn about and try-out items used on the Santa Fe Trail.  For a small fee visitors can ride the stagecoach around the site, “write home” with a pen and ink journal, pan for gold or make a hook in the blacksmith shop.  Visitors also can see what's cooking on Mrs. Mahaffie's stove and try their skills at a variety of games typically played by children in the 19th century.  Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner to eat under the white tent.

The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm will host free Family Fun Nights 5-8 p.m. every Thursday night in June and July.  A fee applies to some special activities including stagecoach rides.  Each Thursday night visitors can participate in hands-on activities associated with a different aspect of 1860s history. Again this year, the first 100 visitors can collect a Mahaffie Wild West Show trading card; attend each week to collect all 8.  Weekly themes are: Border War Showcase – July 12 and Kansas Farming - July 19 and July 26.

Day Out with Frank and Ella Wednesday and Thursday

Preschools, day cares and other youth groups or individuals are invited to attend these drop-in summer fun sessions. Sessions are Wednesdays 9 a.m. to noon or Thursdays noon to 3 p.m. in June and July. Participants will enjoy a different theme each week with hands-on activities, crafts, a stagecoach ride (paying youth only) and must be accompanied by an adult. Historic Trails will be the theme June 27 and 28.
