The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site, 1200 Kansas City Rd., in Olathe will feature activities from the Civil War for the theme for this week’s Family Fun Night. Free admission and for a small fee visitors can ride the stagecoach around the site, write home with a pen and ink journal, and make something to take home in the blacksmith shop.
Visitors can see what life would have been like for a solider in camp and learn about the cannon by walking through an artillery drill. Visitors also can visit outdoor cooking and try their skills at a variety of games typically played by children in the 19th century. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner to eat under the white tent.
As a special feature Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop is hosting representatives from area historical sites sharing information about the Civil War in Kansas and Missouri. Visiting sites will include John Brown from the Battle of Black Jack, Wornall House, Battle of Westport, Adair Cabin, Jesse James Farm, Jackson County Historical Society, Bushwhacker Museum, John Brown State Historic Site, Cass County Public Library and Freedoms Frontier National Heritage Area.
Preschools, day cares and other youth groups or individuals are invited to attend these drop-in summer fun sessions. Sessions are Wednesdays 9 a.m. to noon or Thursdays noon to 3 p.m. in July. Participants will enjoy a different theme each week with hands-on activities, crafts, a stagecoach ride (paying youth only) and must be accompanied by an adult. Civil War will be the theme July 11 and 12. Participants will be able to write in a journal, learn about a Civil War Soldier Camp Life, and try their hand at rubberband cannons.
Mahaffie will offer stagecoach rides at the Ag Hall of Fame 630 N 126th Street Bonner Springs, KS on Satuday July 14th as part of their Tractor Daze 2012. Other activities at this event include Southwest Dairy Milking Demos, trucks,machinery and Equipment Displays and construction equipment. For more information about the event, www.aghalloffame.com
Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site is operated by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Olathe. Open hours, stagecoach operations, living history activities, special events and programs vary seasonally. Access is limited in the winter months and the site is closed major holidays.
