Mahaffie will host Tiger Cub Scout Day 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, October 20. Tiger Cub Scouts can earn some requirements for their Making My Family Special program as well as a special Mahaffie patch only offered during this program. Program registration is $10 per scout, accompanying adults are admitted free. Scouts should bring a sack lunch, a water bottle and dress for the weather. To register call (913) 971-5111. Payment is due the day of the event. Also during Tiger Cub Scout Day, Mahaffie will feature Harvest activities for visitors. Harvest activities may include sawing wood, making apple cider, and picking corn.
Dress in costume and enjoy fall harvest activities at Mahaffie. Trick or Treat OFF the Street will be on Saturday, October 27 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Activities may include horse drawn hay wagon rides, see what is cooking on the cookstove, visit the blacksmith and candy stations from local businesses and civic organizations. Admission is $3/person ages 3 and up and includes all activities! Please park for this event in the parking lot near the Mahaffie Home as the Heritage Center is hosting a reception that evening. No registration is required for this event.
Learn more about early Olathe history by meeting some of the characters resting in the Olathe Memorial Cemetery. The theme this year will be Olathe during the Civil War. The tours will focus on William Quantrill's Raid on Olathe in September 1862. Quantrill led a group of raiders through Olathe and his band killed six men. The raiders also looted Olathe businesses and destoryed two newspapers. Characters featured in the Cemetery Tours may include different citizen perspectives of the raid. Cemetery Tours are Thursday October 11, Friday October 12 and Saturday October 13. Tours are at 7:00 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. each evening. Please meet for the tours at Northview Elementary School, 905 N. Walker. Tickets are $5/adults and $4/children ages 5-11. Tickets can be purchased at the Heritage Center Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tours on Thursday October 11 and the 7:30 p.m. tour on Saturday October 13 are already sold out! On Saturday, September 29, Mahaffie staff took Burt the horse, Mollie the calf, and two goats to assist with the Citizen Emergency Response Team's Animals in Disaster Training. Over 30 participants learned about possible behaviors of animals in distress, how to approach animals during and after a disaster, and learned techinques of moving animals. The training was held at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Garnder, KS.
On Sunday, October 7, Mahaffie staff took the stagecoach to Lamborn Farms near Leavenworth, KS for the Kaw Valley Farm Tour. The Kaw Valley Farm Tour showcased farms in Douglas, Leavenworth, Johnson and Wyandotte Counties. Farmers offered guided tours of their individual farms and shared their farm practices with visitors. The Lamborn Farm offers Grass Fed-Beef, pork and lamb through the Leavenworth County Farmer's Market. Their farm recently received an award from the Kansas Preservation Alliance for their work preserving a 100 year old barn. We enjoyed a crisp fall day and sharing with visitors great opportunities of visiting Mahaffie. The picture is from the Lamborn Farm.
