Mahaffie Gearing Up for Spring!

The Interpretive Site Coaltion will be hosting their annual Kick Off to the Passport to Adventure Program on Saturday March 26, 2011 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Olathe Bass Pro Shop, 12051 Bass Pro Drive, Olathe, KS. The Passport to Adventure program encourages all to explore Kansas City history, science, and nature during the summer. Visit a participating site, answer the question in the guide and get excited because you are in store for a great adventure hunt!

At the Kick Off, you can visit booths and discover adventures that await you in local history, science and nature centers. Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm and Ernie Miller Nature Center from Olathe will be present at this year’s kickoff. FREE admission to explore all of the booths at the Olathe Bass Pro Shop.  

Spring Plowin' and Plantin'

The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site, 1200 Kansas City Rd., will be open for Spring Plowin' and Plantin' Saturday April 2 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Watch draft animals pull plows as the fields are prepared for 19th Century crops. Help plant Bloody Butcher Corn in the afternoon and other hands-on living history activities will be available. The historic 1860s stone farmhouse will be open and historic interpreters will be cooking on the cookstove in the same space that once served as the dining room for stagecoach passengers. Stagecoach rides will be offered at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and are included with the cost of admission.

Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for kids age 5-11. Olathe residents receive $1 off each admission.

Mahaffie's Spring Cemetery Tour Highlights Local History

Tickets are available now for the popular Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site’s annual Spring Cemetery Tours.  Mahaffie staff will lead visitors through the historic Olathe Memorial Cemetery exploring the symbols, historical figures and landscapes of the cemetery.  Olathe Memorial Cemetery was established in 1865 and is located at 738 N. Chestnut St.

The Spring Cemetery Tour will be held Sunday, April 17 with tours leaving at 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30 p.m.  The tours meet at Northview Elementary, 905 N. Walker. 

The tour will require long periods of walking and refreshments will be provided.

Tickets are $3/adults and $2/children ages 5-11.  Tickets may be purchased by calling the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm at (913) 971-5111 or by visiting the historic site, 1200 Kansas City Rd., Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Sunday noon to 4 p.m.

Treat Your Mother to an Afternoon Tea this Mother’s Day

In honor of Mother’s Day, the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site will host a Mother’s Day Tea from 1:30-3:30 p.m., Sunday, May 1.  This event is open to mothers and daughters age 12 and up.  Event participants will learn about 19th Century etiquette, make a craft and enjoy treats, tea and a stagecoach ride. Musical entertainment will be provided. 

Tickets are $12 per person, Olathe residents receive $2 off.  Reservations may be made by calling the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm at (913) 971-5111 or visiting the historic site, 1200 Kansas City Rd., Wednesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Sundays noon to 4 p.m.  The registration deadline is 5 pm. Friday, April 29.
