Vernon Avant, Director of Olathe Hoops will put on a free clinic for any coach in the Olathe Parks & Recreation Basketball League, Thursday, December 13th, 6-7pm at Millcreek gym (311 E. Park St.)

This popular event features the Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting, choirs from Olathe school's, a variety of local talent and the arrival of Santa Claus. Other attractions include ice sculpting, a visit with Santa, food and drinks. Proceeds raised for the Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund from businesses, civic groups and the sale of holiday ornaments go to benefit agencies in our area that address the needs of the less fortunate in our community.

Kick off your Christmas Season with music in the Heritage Center from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. from the Shady Grove String Band, making ornaments, hands on Living History activities, and making gingerbread houses for a small fee. Santa arrives at the Heritage Center at 1 p.m.! FREE admission, $2/person ages 3 and up for stagecoach rides, weather and ground conditions permitting. No registration is required for Christmas Open House.

Friends and family in town for the Thanksgiving weekend? Or need a diversion from holiday shopping? Visit Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and enjoy the exhibits in the Heritage Center and Living History activities. Activities may include: Friday, November 23 see what is cooking on Mrs. Mahaffie's cookstove, take a stagecoach ride (weather and ground conditions permitting) and visit the Mahaffie House. Stagecoach rides on Friday will be offered at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m, and 3:30 p.m.

Enjoy the holiday inspired decorations of the Heritage Center and have breakfast with Santa! Cost is $7/person and includes a photo with Santa. Registration is due by Friday November 15. To register by phone, call (913) 971-5111. Payment is due the day of the program. All ages welcome!

Ages 12 and up (for females only) FREE program This program represents a living legacy in honor of Ali Kemp. Ali, a 19-year-old Leawood resident, was murdered while working at an area residential pool in 2002. The goal of this program is to raise awareness and give women the self-protection skills needed to avoid becoming the victim of a violent crime. Participants learn basic techniques for thwarting an attack which could save their lives. This free program is being presented by the Ali Kemp Educational Foundation (T.A.K.E.
