The top three teams from the Olathe Public Schools Culinary Arts program will compete for scholarships in the final round of the fourth annual COUNTRY Chef Challenge at 9 a.m. on August 30 at the Olathe Farmers’ Market Olathe Community Center location. Using fresh ingredients from the market, teams from Les Arts Culinaires will create original dishes in front of a live audience. A panel of local celebrity judges will determine the winning two-student team. »

In observance of the Labor Day holiday, the Olathe Community Center will open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, September 1. Child Watch and Kid Zone will not be available. The following is the special aquatics and group exercise schedule: Pool: 7 - 9 a.m. - River Walk & Lap Swim 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Open Swim Special Fitness Classes (open to all ages): 9 - 9:50 a.m. – Hula Hoop 10 – 10:50 a.m. – Zumba in the Gym »

The City of Olathe was notified today that Cedar Lake (15500 S. Lone Elm Road) has tested positive for high levels of Blue-Green Algae. Though blue-green algae blooms are natural phenomena, exposure to high levels can be dangerous to both humans and animals. Swimming is not allowed at Cedar Lake, but the City is urging park visitors to be mindful of pets and make sure they do not swim in or drink from the lake until the algae levels are reduced. »

The fourth annual Chefs Challenge is back. Top student chefs from the Olathe Public Schools Culinary Arts program will take on the Olathe Farmers’ Market at 9 a.m. Aug. 23 and Aug. 30 at the Olathe Community Center location. »

Due to staffing changes the City of Olathe will reduce pool operations beginning in August as follows: Mill Creek pool will close for the season on Sunday, August 3 at 7 p.m. Frontier Trail and Oregon Trail pools will close on Sunday, August 10 at 7 p.m. Black Bob Bay will remain open through Labor Day with new hours starting August 11: August 11-15; Monday – Friday open 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Beginning August 16 – Open Saturday and Sunday only from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. through Labor Day, September 1 »

The FREE Olathe Summer Concert Series promises to end on a high note with Kansas City’s own Liverpool. The sounds of the Beatles will fill Frontier Park on Friday, August 1. Olathe Parks & Recreation presents the Second-Annual Teen Bash at Black Bob Park and Black Bob Bay on July 31, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Check-in begins at 6:45 p.m. and the event is open to students entering sixth grade, through students leaving eighth grade. The event is free with the donation of any school supply item. School supplies collected at the event will benefit the Olathe Public Schools Foundation. »
