Prescribed burn of prairie areas

Post Date:02/26/2018
Preparation is underway for a prescribed burn of prairie areas near the Heritage Center at Mahaffie, Stagecoach Park, Lone Elm Park and Valley Road medians. The burns are currently scheduled for the week of Feb. 26, but the burn may be postponed if weather conditions are not favorable.

Periodic prescribed burns keep the prairie grasses and wildflowers healthy and thriving while simultaneously reducing undesirable and weedy plants. The City of Olathe Parks & Recreation staff work closely with the Olathe Fire Department to conduct these burns. Staff closely monitor weather to ensure that conditions such as humidity, temperature, and wind speeds are in line with fire safety protocol.

Every effort will be made to manage smoke for minimal impact to the surrounding community; however, it is recommended that residents keep windows closed during the burn. Please contact Paul Krueger at 913-971-8626 or for more information.
