Halloween Tips To Keep Kids Safe

Post Date:10/28/2019 11:27 AM

The Olathe Police Department wants everyone to enjoy a safe and happy Halloween by following these safety tips:

  • Wear light colored or reflective clothing for costumes
  • Check the costume to see if it is made of fire-resistant material
  • Ensure children can see well; apply face makeup instead of a mask, if possible
  • Keep costumed children away from pets that could become frightened
  • Avoid hard plastic or wood props such as daggers or swords to prevent injury
  • Ensure younger children are accompanied by a responsible adult
  • Remind children of the dangers associated with crossing and walking along streets at night
  • Use a flashlight at night or go out while there is still daylight
  • Visit only homes you know with the porch light on
  • Remind children to avoid open flames from pumpkins or Halloween decorations
  • Give and accept only commercially wrapped or packaged candy
  • Examine all treats before letting children eat them
  • Wash all fruit and cut into small pieces to ensure nothing hazardous has been placed inside
