New 3D Crosswalk Installed in Downtown Olathe

Post Date:12/18/2018 2:16 PM

If you find yourself driving in downtown Olathe on Cherry St. from Park St. to Loula St., you might notice the new 3D crosswalk, a special type of painted crosswalk that gives the illusion of boxes on the street.

3D crosswalks help draw drivers’ attention to pedestrians who may be crossing the street. Drivers approaching the crosswalk will see an illusion of boxes in the street for a moment, beginning from roughly 40 to 50 feet away. This helps drivers slow down to a safe speed if pedestrians are present. Additionally, the 3D crosswalk paint has glass beads in it to enhance nighttime visibility. For pedestrians using the crosswalk, it will simply look like blobs of colored paint.

Pedestrian safety is of the upmost importance to the City of Olathe. The City follows the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) guidance and criteria for the use of pavement markings, including crosswalks. The low speed limit and clear visibility on Cherry St. made this location a good fit for the city’s first 3D crosswalk. Moving forward, City staff will look at additional locations in Olathe that may benefit from the new 3D crosswalks.

Please contact Cheryl Lambrecht, Senior Traffic Engineer, at CALambrecht@OlatheKS.org with any questions or concerns regarding the 3D crosswalk.
